YOU WILL NEED:
VASALINE
LOTS OF TOWELS THAT YOURE NOT PARTICULARLY ATTACHED TO
SCISSORS
PLASTER WRAP BANDAGES
A PATIENT MODEL WHO LIKES TO GET A LITTLE DIRTY
aaaannnnddd... a BOWL OF WARM WATER
[to start! decide what part of the body you are casting, example, back? front torso? face? belly? boobies?? then.
ok. so you need vasaline.. i cant stress the vasaline part enough, SLATHER IT ON. uhm you need a bowl of warm water, and a patient model. i found out you can get plaster clothes at art supplies stores. or a drug store. but theyre cheaper form an art store. or if youre super cleaver.. it might be worth it to find a medical supplies store? but thats hard.. then cut the sheets into 2 inch strips. 2'x6 inches is easiest for backs, but depending you might want to work bigger or smaller...
ok.. so when youve got the selected apendage slathered up. dip the plaster cloth in warm water, let some water drip off, and then smooth it on to the skin, working from top to bottom.
you can pretty much just apply on top of damp layers,.. you want about 3 layers. the more you smooth it... the more like plaster and the less like cloth it will look like.. when i did a back it took about 40 minutes?
then youll know its ready to pop off if you can lift at the edges and it keeps its shape and doesnt bend. you need to let it dry over night before you do anything to it. ie. gess and paint it, or sand it, or varnish it.
if you want to texture it (smooth it out or make it sculpture-esque and chunky) then use liquid plaster .. and the i use white glue around the edges..if you want to trim it, then glue the frayed bits down..
theres lots of steps.. but theyre super fun once you get it donw... i would suggest starting with somthing small like a face for practice before you try something big.
*** if you are casting someones face, it is ok to go over the eys.. AS LONG AS YOU COVER THE EYES WITH A STRIP OF CLOTH*** .. plastering over mouths is fine. as long as they can keep it closed...and never plaster over someones nostrils. . thats just not nice.
i love making casts... theres somthing so sensal about it.. but also morbid.. and historic.. and then theyre bandages? so its very comforting, and reassuring. i find cast making kind of like cementing ideas. its kind of like preserving an absract emotion/feeling.. its like a memory you can hold... ..
Devious Comments
So... I think I'mma slather up someone else's torso and do it.
I'm doing this whole abortion thing with it...
Woot.
I gotta make a fetus today!
HOORAY! And make myself a sinister little mobile for this project.
We had a big casting tutorial in Sculpture today with my hero Mike. He's the technician for our sculpture class and he is literally the nicest, coolest guy ever.
Ugh, my torso looks fine, I actually got Kevin to do it over me, but I just don't think my body suits what I need. Fuck, I need to find a willing model.... So hard. People get all weird when you ask them to strip naked and slather vaseline on themselves...
Casting is slightly addictive. We got into liquid latex today, plaster'o'
So lame.
Anyway, I don't have internet access at home anymore, so I'm at school, and I think I Need to mosey home and eat some left over chili.
Have I mentioned I make the best chili ever?
God I wish I could go out to Montreal, I feel so dead here, my social life is null and I really wanna see the old familiar faces that don't bore me. But alas, the ones that don't bore me all moved away, and the ones that bore me and I don't care about seeing, are readily available on Salt Spring and here in Vic...
Ugh.
And how are you?

clare, im coming home in exactly 3 weeks. im hoplesly restless. i feel the same way you do. i miss my familiar brains to bounce ideas off of, the ones that dont bore me to death.
Montreal is pretentious, vain, and incredibly shallow. i will explain it more when i come home, but its very disheartening. and it sucks my inspiration. i too often get excited about new materials, and then rememebr the complete lack of money and time, and space..
oh god, i dont think i should even be allowed to get my hands on that blue molding stuff.. i would go nuts. molding and molding and molding.
ive pretty much decided that im going to go to camosun next year. but probably as an independent student... so i dont feel like im jumping through stupid lame ass hoops.
dont feel discouraged about the casting, i had some unsucsessful tries before i figured it out. id be youre mold. but youd have to wait untill the 9th ...
OH PS. what are you doing on dec 9th???
if youre free... im deffinatly coming in from the airport at 12.30 pm. if youre not free, thats fine, i can come back over another day. just thought maybe if you were free it be cool to grab coffee before i head over to the island. .. anyways,
i too am in a coffee shop, and must wander home, .. although my house however is so very lackign in teh food department. very foodless. ive been eating oatmeal for the last 3 days. blah.
aihgt. well, hope the casting goes better, trust me about the sitting up thing.. it works waaaaay better.
< 3 later.
The 9th, I'll be studying for my final exam in Modern Art History, but I can make time. I can make time.
